the casual red lip

On May 23, 2015 by theseventhsphinx

I never get tired of jeans and a t-shirt. High-waisted or low-rise, v-neck, scoop, or crew, it’s the quintessential casual combo.

The great thing about the unobtrusiveness of jeans and a t-shirt is the influence the other elements of the outfit suddenly gain. You can look slovenly or ultra-stylish; it’s all down to the accessories and peripherals. How could anyone who loves accessories pass up such a chance to let them shine? I dressed up the simple base with beige d’orsay pumps, pearls, and a belt. Belts can be so effective.

And a casual red lip like this is so great, so throwaway. Even better with sneakers and tousled hair. An ultra glam red lip is all well and good, but the unexpected, tossed-on red lip is this delightful surprise. Lisa Eldridge recently did a tutorial on this kind of casual glam lip (all red lips are a little bit glam, no?), which I recommend along with the rest of her channel.

Tom Ford Love Lust blush layered over Chanel cream blush in Affinité with the phenomenal Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer— a stunning, metallic gold cream highlighter—on the cheekbones. Geisha Ink Silk Mascara, which is excellent, a densely bristled wand makes it easy to coat lashes in one or two swipes (I take some of the product off on a tissue before applying to keep the lashes natural). This small Canadian brand does wonderful eye makeup, I would also recommend their liquid liner.

Don’t usually go for graphic tees but love this one.

Sole Society d’orsay pumps, Express high-waisted jeans, J Crew tee, Madewell leather belt, Pearl Paradise lavender metallic freshwater studs, Skagen watch, Michael Kors pavé open arrow ring, Ray-Ban aviators. On the lips: Tatcha Kyoto Red Silk lipstick and NYX lip pencil in Hot Red.

How great is this cocktail ring? Gold molded into coral with jade stones nestled in. Thrifted.

the winter cloak

I think this speaks for itself.

IMG_0645

In the midst of a snowstorm, no less. Cloaks, people! Wear cloaks!

So glam, and seemingly the only outerwear own that has a hood. How can this be? [That can’t be right.] And how is eyeliner so dramatic?  Eight seconds of metallic plum eyeliner later I look suddenly intense and vixen-like and a little overdressed.

Wool fur trimmed cloak (eBay), Pratt and Hart leather mittens, Old Navy sweater, Express jeans (thrifted), Sorel boots, vintage Timex watch, Pearl Paradise necklace, Roxanne Mulberry bag (thrifted). On the lips, MAC RiRiWoo layered (darkened) with Japonesque Color lipstick in shade 7 (liking the bold lip generally). This is the NARS Exhibit A blush again. So good.IMG_0632x

strawberries & cream

My latest impulse buy is a very properly stringy kind of string bikini, with triangles none too generous in size and with little strawberries on it. We are perhaps approaching the line. I think it’s so cute, though things being so cute does not usually make my purchase a forgone conclusion…it’s like white (which I love), only cuter than white, I think is what happened.

How glam is this hat? I theorize that it would posh up any outfit. Excellent sun protection, too, if a bit of an umbrella-like liability. This is an 8″ brim (compare with this one, which is 5″ and I would say still quite dramatic).  I actually tried on a 10″ brim but was outdone. 10″ is too much for even me.

Bikini from Pret-à-Surf (via The Outnet), skirt from some shop in Santa Fe, sun hat from San Diego Hat Co., [cheapo] wayfarer-style sunglasses from eBay, pearl studs from Pearl Paradise*, pearl bracelet from eBay, espadrille wedges from Eric Michael.

*I am loving how they stand out against the backdrop of the hat brim. So often modestly sized earrings get lost in the chaos. Do you need any more convincing that pearls would be a salutary addition to your life? If so, wait until next week.

winter chic: faux fur collar

On February 13, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

IMG_1352I have an extremely warm pimp-style coat for winter, with a broad shearling collar and wrist + hem accents but, for the most part, it hasn’t been cold enough to warrant it. My wool coat serves…does this mean I don’t get to have a massive fur collar?

Happily, it does not.

This one was solidly inexpensive and just what I was looking for. Like the idea of wearing it over a motorcycle jacket, too, but I haven’t found the right one yet.

Added monster pearl drop earrings for a look that is says… Anna Karenina.

Faux fur collar: eBay, pearl dangles: eBay, wool coat: Kenneth Cole, Celtic patterned acrylic scarf: gifted, leggings: Topshop (thrifted), boots: Sorel, legwarmers: who knows, gloves: Bon-Ton, alpaca muff: eBay, on the lips: Korres lip butter glaze in wild rose.
