Cali-style

On October 19, 2015 by theseventhsphinx

I was recently in California, a place I love. Mainly Oakland, where I was visiting GeekOutsider, though I was in San Francisco some as well. It’s refreshing to go somewhere with such a different atmosphere, such a different look from where I live now.  [I’ve been back from vacation for a while but I’ve been working non-stop. Caught a cold, too, inconveniently, on which I blame plane air; always so suspicious and dry.]

Lake Merritt is lousy with ducks and cranes. I do like a good crane.

Seriously, who doesn’t want a succulent wall? If you follow me on instagram you know I’m always stopping to take pictures of plants. Flowers especially. I find them beautiful and like to have them as studies for painting.

Isn’t this pineapple situation amazing? I just found it like this…

Dim sum! Guys, I had so much dim sum. So many black bean sesame balls.

Too bad I didn’t take pictures of the food at Elephant Sushi or Burma Love, so, so good. Burma Love or Burma Superstar: can’t go wrong.

Waxflower (Chamelaucium) is an evergreen shrub with wonderfully aromatic spiny leaves that smell like lemon thyme and charming little lavender blossoms.

They remain fresh and bright for many days.

weekend distraction: peonies

On June 8, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

I love peonies. Who can say just why – the delicate proliferation of petals, the elaborate, explosive configurations… some instinctive affinity I can’t explain.  They are in season on the east coast now and I finally took some home,  spending a pleasant, meditative half an hour trimming and fiddling around with them in this porcelain pitcher. Every time I change the water I can fiddle with them some more, so it’s a nice, interactive purchase.

Want to try some more ambitious flower arrangements. Wabi-sabi has been on my mind, the aesthetic of beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.”

Their fragrance is lovely, like a young, light, restrained rose with maybe a hint of white floral in these particular blooms; tuberose, lily. I hope at some point to lord over a patch of earth and plant different varietals all over.

weekend distraction: floral crowns

On April 13, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

Speaking of floral crowns, I basically want this whole etsy shop.

I wanted, specifically, a floral garland with fairly realistic, not plastic yet durable flowers, well spaced (neither too crowded nor too sparse), that would be adjustable and versatile. It took many hours of searching (it takes time, finding just what you want), but I found exactly what I was looking for.

I think these are so lovely and elegant. In fact, they are the only garlands I found that met my criteria at all. A gorgeous bohemian summer accessory. ~$15-$18.

I got the first garland pictured last summer…having a hard time deciding between some of the beautiful options available in the shop now, but I know I want at least one more. At least.
