Belated but….

Lana Kane Halloween 2015

You know what I realized just after taking these?

I forgot to put the belt on! [Hard to imagine when else I will ever wear that belt…]

What a shame.

Lana Kane Halloween 2015

Still, one recognizes Lana Kane, no?

the knee socks

On March 9, 2015 by theseventhsphinx

What is not to love about knee socks? So sporty and unexpected. So sleek and practical.

I especially like them with short shorts (or, here, briefs), so they can highlight a maximal expanse of thigh. Of course they highlight the knee as well, that bizarre, oft-ignored component of anatomy, making them completely distinct in silhouette from their close cousin, the thigh-high. I slightly prefer the knee-high length, perhaps because my legs are not especially long (not short, not long) and there is a lengthening effect on the upper leg joint when it is isolated from hip to knee. That and I just like them. [And I’ve watched a few too many kpop videos.]

They keep your legs warm, too. Sadly still relevant here in Cambridge.

Old Navy sweatshirt, Commando cotton briefs, American Apparel knee socks. On the lips: MAC lip pencil in Brick and NARS Velvet Matte lipstick in Terre de Feu.

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. I was on vacation in San Francisco the week before last and sick last week. Hope to get back on schedule soon!

earth tones, winter edition

On January 19, 2015 by theseventhsphinx

Earth tones suit every season and seem to be all I’m drawn to lately, with lipstick and scarves the only moments of color. Ever since I began wearing this parka I’ve been opting for more olive, dark sienna, charcoal, and miscellaneous dark taupe shades. That is, I always opt for those shades but now especially so (as opposed to the other usual suspects like camel, tan, cream, light ruddy browns).

These colors always suit the kind of mulberry/bordeaux lip shades I’ve been going for. This is NARS Pure Matte lipstick in Volga. Nice formula, good longevity, gorgeous color. Not as forgiving on dry lips but I don’t expect that from a matte formula anyway.

I love this broad black suede belt with its enormous gold crescent buckle, vintage Donna Karan. And seeing this American Apparel sweater dress in a different season now (which reminds me as soon as it’s warm enough I need to wear it exactly like that again).

Stay warm.

the beachy nymph

On August 22, 2014 by theseventhsphinx

I was determined to wear a garland before the summer was out.

This kind of easy, beachy look is a good example of a summer uniform for me: bikini top, loose sleeveless thing over top (if there can be an ancient Athenian garb situation going on, so much the better), trusty gladiators, piles of rings and bracelets, tote-scale bag.

This is a simple, no makeup makeup look, using a few new favorites and a few old favorites. Bioderma Photoderm, a tinted moisturizer/spf,  is very sheer and natural, a bit like Origins VitaZing in texture. There is a regular (untinted) version that is also really nice, lovely texture. MAC Huggable lipcolor in Love Beam (already sold out it seems, quelle surprise), much blotted, Tarte cheek stain in Blissful, a peachy pink that adds instant freshness to the face (mine is so well used nearly all the text has worn off, and this is the old packaging because these things last forever). Josie Maran Argan Illuminizer, my current favorite highlighter, which is saying a lot given the formidable competition, which competition includes this MAC bronzing powder Nude on Board (also sold out but available here). More on highlighters soon.

American Apparel drawstring dress, garland from Etsy, Seafolly Neo Tribe bikini (new, really incredibly tiny on the bottom, Brazilian-style, I like. Not looking like it’s going to see a beach this summer, unfortunately), French market basket, Ray Ban aviators.

the short shorts

On July 12, 2014 by theseventhsphinx

I can really get behind shorts being as short as the name promises. They should cover the bits that weren’t invited to the party, but there is a healthy number of times and places for short shorts.

I don’t even seem to own long shorts.

We’ve got shortish shorts, and we’ve got shorter shorts.

And I especially, especially like them when worn on a bike.*

*Things to wear on a bike: short shorts, short skirts, mid-length skirts, longish skirts, hats, diaphanous scarves, anklets, cross-body bags.

I don’t have many short skirts or dresses, though, tennis gear excepted. Completely different thing. And I can tell I am getting older, as my idea of what is short is getting longer.

These are just about as short as they can be without being denim hotpants.

[Not that hotpants are off the table. Let’s not be hasty.]

The speakers on this bag aren’t that loud/functional, actually, but I could not care less.

Neon coral Converse high tops (an old color from the Chuck Taylor Fresh line), Paris Blues shorts, American Apparel braided belt, Green Envelope tank, Public C7i bicycle, Loop NYC Audio Couture boombox bag, Vuarnet sunglasses, Skagen watch, earrings rescued from the 80s. On the lips: Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in La Favorite.*

*EDITOR’S NOTE: Oops. Wrong. This is the new, wonderfully creamy Clinique Long Last Soft Matte lipstick in Matte Peony. Much less peachy than La Favorite. A much truer, brighter pink. I don’t know what I was thinking…this is what happens when you have more lipstick than you can possibly wear in a lifetime. So, yes, this is lovely. I was worried this and the Matte Mandarin would be UK exclusive colors but they showed up on the US Clinique site a month or so later. Phew.

Riding my bike is my favorite thing these days.
