on the street: tie-dye & tweed

On April 30, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

Great shape on this tweed jacket, with almost a military feel from the symmetrical pockets. There is nothing I don’t like about this look. Especially like this facial hair situation, substantial yet neatly structured.

maybe….this: bicycle

On April 29, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

I want a bike.

Not just any bike, either, a light, breezy road bike with a Dutch silhouette and coloring that personally appeals.

Something like the Globe Daily series…

You get the idea, low, swooping crossbar, or whatever that bar is called (yeah…possibly I need to learn more about bikes), prominent splash-guards, chain guard, clean lines, and some appealing color options.

I like the step-through design, too, as I’m not that confident a rider, at least not in the city, which is why I haven’t considered getting one before now. That and helmets, which are, for the naturally curly, the enemy. I’d like to be more mobile, though, and a bike (aside from the sobering Boston bike injury and mortality statistics…) sounds like an ideal option.

[Not to mention they are such ideal props for bicycle-chic outfits! I am already inspired, and I’m categorizing this post under fashion > accessories.]

I’m thinking…a pale green or blue, possibly cream. Love those white tires, too. Hmmm. I think the pale blue with the white tires is my favorite…

Conveniently I have plenty of time to mull this over, as the cost is something I’d have to save up to meet and make calculations to even consider, and I need to build my bike fund. Still, something like this is just what I am looking for.

weekend distraction: Erykah Badu

On April 28, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

Given a choice between the demure and the bold, Erykah Badu routinely goes for the bold.

I aspire to this pattern.

The gold lips…the gold everything.

Love this shot.

Here is a woman who is not afraid of making a statement, and with such elegance and sass. She is, as her new single with Janelle Monae proclaims her, a Q.U.E.E.N.

I imagine that she, like myself, as Frost has it, holds with those who favor fire.

She has me thinking that I should absolutely experiment with turbans and wondering…how big can my hair get now? Big hair and short shorts….such a great summer look. Also, can’t wait to show you the wig I just got.

acquisitions: antique jade & pearl ring

On April 27, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

IMG_3187I was looking for a simple, slightly old fashioned pearl ring, a single pearl on a gold band (open to modest accents, or an ostentatious pearl) but  I am extremely particular and difficult to please, and I found this antique jade and pearl number first. A jade cabochon with delicate veining surrounded by round or near-round seed pearls, set in gold. This has such a wonderful heirloom feel to it, and is certainly worthy of being passed down. There’s something inspiring about wearing jewelry with a history, even if I don’t know what that history is.

I am wearing it here.

My appreciation of pearls has been established, but jade, too, appeals. Imagining it with a Victorian-inspired ensemble…will have to demonstrate at some point.

What do you think?

And, I was reasoning, I can just keep looking for that pearl ring I want…

flowers and stripes

On April 26, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

Finally a day nice enough to wear my new Bass oxfords. Yes, I got shoes with flowers on them. Yellow ones. I fear it is a slippery slope.

When it’s not slung over my shoulder messenger bag style, I often carry my bag in this strange, inefficient way, bunching up the short strap.

These leggings are a little tighter and a little more high-waisted than anything else I have…but I’m getting into that look. Or, I can get into it, with conditions.

This is the loose, haphazard bun I throw my hair into most days. This hairstyle has the excellent virtue of taking less than a minute to execute.

Oh, this watch is new. From the sleek Danish brand Skagen, known for their extremely thin movements. I love this simple, clean gold design (and a two-toned watch wherein both tones are gold is me all over). It’s settling in nicely.

Bass Thea oxfords, green envelope top, Topshop Baxter leggings, American Apparel braided belt (I have this belt in so many colors), Lucky Brand bag, Ray-Ban aviators, Skagen watch, Scotch & Soda leather wrap bracelet, vintage earrings. On the lips: Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid lipstick in Shocking Coral.
