the verdigris mani

On April 24, 2016 by theseventhsphinx

verdigris, n. a bright bluish-green encrustation or patina formed on copper or brass by atmospheric oxidation, consisting of basic copper carbonate.

I’ve been wanting to collaborate with indie Cambridge nail salon Wet Paint Nail Spa for a while. Michelle, the owner, is a seriously talented nail technician, with the curiosity and creativity displayed by the best artists in every medium. I’ll definitely be featuring more of her work in the future. If you are in the Boston area I cannot recommend this salon highly enough, the other technicians are wonderful as well.

I asked her to create a look inspired by my snakeskin clutch and makeup bag and she designed this incredible verdigris manicure, mimicking oxidized copper and at the same time reminding me of gorgeous reptilian eyes. I love every shade of copper…really all warm metallics (as evidenced by my recent eyeshadow post), and could not be more pleased with how it turned out.

This is two coats of acrylic paint (paint! Not nail polish, painted on with a paint brush! Which I will not be trying at home.) dusted with a glittery green pigment from CND. Topcoat and basecoat from DazzleDry, both of which I am so impressed with (really quick drying) and plan to pick up immediately.

Longtime readers will remember my beloved python clutch. The teal one above is from the same Etsy shop, linmade.

Like the tarnished silver of the amber ring with this tarnished copper manicure. I’d been wanting my nails painted for weeks (they are often bare but I crave the decoration once in a while) and now it’s a constant, beautiful distraction.

Freshwater pearl ring from Pearl Paradise, which is having their Mother’s Day sale at the moment…

the turquoise python clutch

On July 16, 2014 by theseventhsphinx

Here’s one of the python bags I picked up from the Etsy shop linmade. Just as lovely in person.

I immediately wanted to see it with white nail polish.

On the nails: Wet n’ Wild French White Cream, which actually I don’t recommend. Not friendly to work with.

We are pleased.

shopping: hand painted python

On June 28, 2014 by theseventhsphinx

I stumbled across this wonderful Etsy shop of handmade and hand painted leather accessories that specializes in python designs, linmade, and, after a few months of deliberation, recently had a bit of a field day.

Welcome to my alley.

Here are the pieces I picked out, which will have to have proper showings once they arrive. I’ve been wanting an oversized envelope-style clutch for a while, and found a couple of pleasing candidates, this simple fold-over design being one.

The primary goal was finding a clean shape with interesting—preferably organic—texture and, above all, a stunning color.* Love this dark, muted teal.

*A few weeks later I completed the quest in a second and completely different way, which will also show you soon.

The second bag I got was a small zippered pouch. This lavender-tinged brown/white/turquoise combination is irresistible to me. Though there are a lot of other nice ones in the shop, the other color combos didn’t stand a chance.

I was going to stop at this but the shop owner, Lina, responded so nicely to a query about shipping (she is based in Indonesia) that I decided to get one of her makeup pouches, fairly squat and wide, and just the capacious-yet-structured style I like for a makeup bag.

And a belt…because actually I’ve been looking for a python belt like this for months now!

Here are a few other items that caught my eye, to give you a better sense of the shop and the great use of color she has:

the pendant

I recently got this pendant hanger, which allows one to hang any pendant from any chain (within the size range of the hanger). How clever is this? It’s shaped like a twisted eternity symbol and can be easily attached and removed. This pendant is a random one with a medieval look, and my favorite pairing with the pearls so far. This pairing would be at home with a much more formal look, is one thing I like about it, making a nice contrast with a casual look.

Love me a bit of houndstooth, love me a bit of python.

This creamy python print behaves effectively as a nude on me (which comes across better at a distance, or out of focus), just with a bit more interest. This 3″ height is quite friendly, too, I find, without looking kittenish.*

*Not that there is anything wrong with looking kittenish, but it is a different thing entirely.

Zara wool houndstooth blazer (thrifted), Express jeans, Pearl Paradise necklace (18″ 8mm strand), J Crew vintage v-neck tee, Nickels python pumps (thrifted), Mulberry Roxanne bag (thrifted). On the lips: Lipstick Queen lipstick in Jean Queen. Also wearing a Japonesque Color blush I’m liking a lot, and will mention properly soon.

the tuxedo stripe

On October 31, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

I like this military/tuxedo stripe, a simple detail that draws the eye. Also like the look of some black leggings I’ve seen where the stripe is in a contrasting fabric rather than color, invariably something leather-ish or shiny.

Leggings from Express (thrifted), J Crew tee, vintage Levi’s belt, Zara scarf, Zara pumps (thrifted), python cuff (eBay), Coal wide-brimmed felted wool fedora. The earrings were a gift from my friend Farrin, who happens to have an exhibit of her art up in Cambridge throughout autumn. My piece is in the show.

And oh yes. This isn’t my hair.

IMG_8516

Looks pretty plausible, I think. Kind of weird if you know what my hair usually looks like, but not unnatural if I darken my eyebrows. Or, I don’t know. What do you think? I like it. Especially with the hat. It’s incredible how much it changes my appearance, at least to me. It’s nice, once in a while, to have a respite from looking like oneself.

I was looking for a wig for Halloween and things got out of hand. Wait ’til you see the others.

p.s. Happy Halloween! I’ll show you my costume soon…
