on the nails: essie dressed to kilt

On November 6, 2014 by theseventhsphinx

I mentioned this Essie polish just recently but I like it so well, here it is again. Dressed to Kilt, from Essie’s Fall 2014 collection. A rich, dark red that’s great for fall/winter.

iittala sarjaton metsa/white mug

Two coats of Dressed to Kilt worn here with OPI nail envy base coat, which I like so much, and OPI rapid dry topcoat, which I don’t like so much but which I am not going to throw away because while completely extravagant at times I am just as often cheap and long-suffering.

That said, there sometimes comes a point, after some months or years of eking functionality out of a mediocre or even actually poor product, when, in a fit of de-cluttering, which is really a fit of rebellion against this conservative, salvaging self, I take great pleasure in throwing such things away.

Thanks to my friend Katy for recommending this shade!

the jumpsuit, the topknot

On September 5, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

I love to be well dress’d Sir: and think it

No scandal to my understanding.

IMG_6625There are bugs on the ground.

I gathered my hair into a topknot when I was messing around with different turban styles and liked it so much I decided to try it officially. I like it, though I think I liked the really (incredibly, horribly, could-not-be-worn-in-public) messy version better.

Oh, this is the bag I usually carry around, these days. A great thrift find that looks like a still-slightly-grubby re-purposed vintage leather football. I don’t necessarily like a bag to look pristine (then it doesn’t look casual), and I don’t want my daily bag to be something I have to suspend in a bubble of anxiety to keep it like new. Better for me to have something that, when it does incur wear, grows in character and interest.

Calvin Klein silk jumpsuit, Steve Madden realove heels, Zara scarf, Skagen watch, vintage LuckyBrand hobo bag. On the nails: OPI polish in Mermaid’s Tears.

These heels make me about 5’11”, and I feel that I take on Amazon-like proportions in them. The pale blush color extends this illusion further still. I like this very much.

I’ve mentioned before that I take heels with a grain of salt, valuing the absence of pain as I do*, but it cannot be denied that they create new lines and angles. When only a bit of standing or sitting is required, I can quite enjoy those lines, those angles.

*The amount of discomfort I’m willing to tolerate seems to depend on many factors.

on the nails: the lizard look

On July 27, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

I still only do my nails rarely, so far, even after acquiring no small amount of nail stuff. I am quite slow, and need a large chunk of time, and just want to take it all off if I’m dissatisfied with the results. Stamping especially is not for the faint of heart. I find it can be meditative, though, provided I am more or less qualified to do what I’ve set out to do. I have to concentrate enough that I can’t really focus on anything else, such that I seem genuinely to have nothing in my head except for the abstract sense of attentiveness.  And even if it doesn’t turn out, who cares?

If it does turn out, I can stare at it all the time/it distracts me (and begins to become intolerable as soon as it begins to chip).

I admit it is sometimes a strained relationship.

This is OPI Jade is the New Black (really like this on its own) over a base coat of OPI Nail Envy, layered with the Pueen10 plate  snakeskin motif stamped in China Glaze Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. OPI RapiDry between coats.

It is bordering on questionable how much I’m into snakeskin right now.
