the short shorts

On July 12, 2014 by theseventhsphinx

I can really get behind shorts being as short as the name promises. They should cover the bits that weren’t invited to the party, but there is a healthy number of times and places for short shorts.

I don’t even seem to own long shorts.

We’ve got shortish shorts, and we’ve got shorter shorts.

IMG_4494

And I especially, especially like them when worn on a bike.*

*Things to wear on a bike: short shorts, short skirts, mid-length skirts, longish skirts, hats, diaphanous scarves, anklets, cross-body bags.

I don’t have many short skirts or dresses, though, tennis gear excepted. Completely different thing. And I can tell I am getting older, as my idea of what is short is getting longer.

IMG_4498

These are just about as short as they can be without being denim hotpants.

[Not that hotpants are off the table. Let’s not be hasty.]

IMG_4514

The speakers on this bag aren’t that loud/functional, actually, but I could not care less.

Neon coral Converse high tops (an old color from the Chuck Taylor Fresh line), Paris Blues shorts, American Apparel braided belt, Green Envelope tank, Public C7i bicycle, Loop NYC Audio Couture boombox bag, Vuarnet sunglasses, Skagen watch, earrings rescued from the 80s. On the lips: Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in La Favorite.*

*EDITOR’S NOTE: Oops. Wrong. This is the new, wonderfully creamy Clinique Long Last Soft Matte lipstick in Matte Peony. Much less peachy than La Favorite. A much truer, brighter pink. I don’t know what I was thinking…this is what happens when you have more lipstick than you can possibly wear in a lifetime. So, yes, this is lovely. I was worried this and the Matte Mandarin would be UK exclusive colors but they showed up on the US Clinique site a month or so later. Phew.

Riding my bike is my favorite thing these days.

on the nails: the lizard look

On July 27, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

I still only do my nails rarely, so far, even after acquiring no small amount of nail stuff. I am quite slow, and need a large chunk of time, and just want to take it all off if I’m dissatisfied with the results. Stamping especially is not for the faint of heart. I find it can be meditative, though, provided I am more or less qualified to do what I’ve set out to do. I have to concentrate enough that I can’t really focus on anything else, such that I seem genuinely to have nothing in my head except for the abstract sense of attentiveness.  And even if it doesn’t turn out, who cares?

If it does turn out, I can stare at it all the time/it distracts me (and begins to become intolerable as soon as it begins to chip).

I admit it is sometimes a strained relationship.

This is OPI Jade is the New Black (really like this on its own) over a base coat of OPI Nail Envy, layered with the Pueen10 plate  snakeskin motif stamped in China Glaze Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. OPI RapiDry between coats.

It is bordering on questionable how much I’m into snakeskin right now.

into: hot pink…evidently

On June 12, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

I don’t think of myself as having a special affinity for pink but I seem to have kind of a lot of it. Where by pink I do not mean pink at all. I mean hot pink.

How do these things happen? Many of these items are by no means new, either. This is an old, slowly developing pattern that I am only just recognizing. A few items lined up in my field of vision and there was just no denying it: nothing out of control, nothing unhealthy, but a definite pattern. Well. What can I say? I am not against neon at all, in certain contexts. More certain contexts than I thought.

Some combination of always wanting to have been an 80’s aerobics instructor and Marc Jacobs, I guess.

Huh.

And this is not even getting into coral. We still need to talk about coral. Just wait until you see the swimsuit I found, it is nearly blinding.

Roxie plaid bikini, unknown hoop earrings, Steve Madden P-Heaven flats, Color Club polish in Warhol Pink, Vivitar card reader, Korres lip butter glaze in Pomegranate, OCC lip tar in Anime, Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in Vivid Rose and Shocking Coral, Wet ‘n Wild MegaLast lipstick in Don’t Blink Pink, Loop NYC Audio Couture Boombox Bag

neon with ice cream

On May 28, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

It started with wanting to wear these neon yellow [P-Heaven] flats from Steve Madden. I am not entirely behind the annual summer neon rush* but when confined to the realms of shoes, nails, and exercise gear… maybe certain accessories, I can support a bit of neon.

*personally, I mean. As one friend from Alabama’s mom says: to each it’s own.

Then [perfect day for it – a gorgeous Memorial Day] I wanted ice cream. In a waffle cone.

Off I went to get the ingredients. Of course, this day just happened to be the day that I discovered that my ice cream scoop was broken (whaaa? Nooo! Awww.). The handle of the ice cream scoop is about as key as you would expect, which amount of keyness is: extreme. BUT I PERSEVERED.

IMG_3981-mod

Ben & Jerry’s Imagine Whirled Peace, exorbitantly priced organic waffle cone, Swatch watch. I almost forgot I had this watch. The ticking is slightly audible so I put it in my sock drawer a couple of months ago…it’s great for this summery girl-next-door kind of look, though. Not that I’ve self-identified as a ‘girl’ for a while.

On the nails: Sally Hansen in Lacey Lilac.

IMG_4002-mod

American Apparel U-neck tank (this kind of generous scoop neck tank is my preferred style), Zara shorts. Cheap eBay version of my other orange mirror sunglasses.

The cone did not disappoint. Note to self: the act of eating ice cream is not photogenic.

on the street: rain boots (mostly)

On April 15, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

I love the rain. Especially when I have my rain boots on.

IMG_2889

IMG_2897

I liked the accent of neon pink on these Air Jordans worn with all black.

IMG_2905

Bricks look so good in the rain. And anything set against them, it seems.

IMG_2912

Bright things look brighter. Marathon runners everywhere.

IMG_2893

Mother-son matching. Couldn’t see if the baby was wearing teeny Hunters. One can only hope.

IMG_2917

It’s a little monotonous how many people wear black rain boots. But contrasting liners help.

IMG_2916

I mean, at least they aren’t black.

IMG_2926

In a sea of black and brown, I saw these red boots several blocks away.

IMG_2933

Yes to this whole scenario.

IMG_2936

Two-tone with tweed. More tweed is needed, I am thinking.

IMG_2891

My rain boots (Kamik).
