earth tones, winter edition

On January 19, 2015 by theseventhsphinx

Earth tones suit every season and seem to be all I’m drawn to lately, with lipstick and scarves the only moments of color. Ever since I began wearing this parka I’ve been opting for more olive, dark sienna, charcoal, and miscellaneous dark taupe shades. That is, I always opt for those shades but now especially so (as opposed to the other usual suspects like camel, tan, cream, light ruddy browns).

These colors always suit the kind of mulberry/bordeaux lip shades I’ve been going for. This is NARS Pure Matte lipstick in Volga. Nice formula, good longevity, gorgeous color. Not as forgiving on dry lips but I don’t expect that from a matte formula anyway.

I love this broad black suede belt with its enormous gold crescent buckle, vintage Donna Karan. And seeing this American Apparel sweater dress in a different season now (which reminds me as soon as it’s warm enough I need to wear it exactly like that again).

Stay warm.

long day

On December 8, 2014 by theseventhsphinx

OK, it’s freezing out, too cold to ride my bike, I work nonstop these days, I’m out of peanut butter, and I have two (TWO!) gigantic blemishes on my chin, which are just astonishing in their size and projected lifespan.* I have to tell you, it is depressing.

*I know they are normal, pimples, common to the species, and I am still as lovable as before, which is I think moderately lovable, and my various skills are unimpaired, but few things put me in a worse mood. And they are not beautiful. I am still here and there beautiful, now and then beautiful, but it is clearly in spite of them.

In honor of these things, and so many more, late Monday post!

Coat. Scarf. Etc. MAC Rebel lipstick, though it’s coming off more pink here than it is in person, really it is more raspberry. I like.

I’m going to watch Downton Abbey now.

the sweatshirt dress, reprise

IMG_1986Same dress, different weather.

This is the new Revlon Matte Balm in Audacious, the formula of which I quite like. I like this color, too, which is much brighter than it’s showing here, nearly neon, like the Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids. Matte bright lips are one of those trends I’m enjoying.

Occasionally one gets honked at when taking pictures of oneself in the street. Occasionally pedestrians will want to use the sidewalk.

Sloppy Joe dress from Hush, Zara scarf, Sorel boots, Mulberry bag (thrifted). 8mm studs from Pearl Paradise. For once I think the ivory overtones in these pearl studs are coming through.

the sweatshirt dress

As I enjoy a sweater dress, so I enjoy a sweatshirt dress. This combination of a bundled up top and unprotected legs is exactly the kind of contrast I love. The bulkier on top, the better, which means this look will just keep getting better the more coats and scarves I have to pile on top. Eventually I’ll need to incorporate tights, but bare legs are superior because: correct! More contrast.

In my world, contrast = good.

This is another lovely pearl necklace on loan from Lilia’s Treasures Etsy shop, a long strand of golden pink ripple pearls. There are swirling wrinkle-like corrugations all over the surface of the pearls, which are themselves beautifully metallic and reflective. Ripples, like keshis, are yet another option for the modern pearl consumer.

I love longer strands:

You can double them up.

You can knot them or, if the strand isn’t long/small enough, gather them with a broach or ribbon

And they look great loose, too, though you may have some Thoroughly Modern Millie moments.

I’m not always interested in showing much leg – it can be in questionable taste or outright trashy – but with a look like this, the more leg, the more contrast, so all of my favorite shots were those revealing maximum thigh. The legwarmers change the skin:clothing ratio, and somehow that expanse of thigh doesn’t seem as risqué as it otherwise might to me. Somehow, I don’t think twice about it. But then, I do have this trashy streak.

Sloppy Joe dress from Hush, H&M leg warmers, necklace from Lilia’s Treasures, Spektre sunglasses, Steve Madden shoes, Breil Milano watch.

I really like pink and gray together. And cream and anything together.

This post is not sponsored. All opinions are my own. Featured pearls are on loan from Lilia’s Treasures.

winter warmers: cloak and muff

On January 28, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

Loving this Irish wool cloak I acquired raiding my step-grandmother’s closet over the holidays, especially all of the colors woven into the herringbone pattern. And muffs: so warm. Why did they ever go out of style?

Cloak by Moriarty Textiles layered over blond leather jacket by black rivet. Alpaca muff (eBay – I added the tasseled wrist strap), acrylic scarf, boots from Sorel. Legwarmers of mysterious origin layered over Free People jeans (thrifted). Gloves from Mercer & Madison,  8mm pearl studs from Peal Paradise. On the lips: Revlon Kissable Balmstain in Crush.

IMG_0954 Hope you are keeping warm.

p.s. thanks to my sister for taking these shots.
