on the street: the gent

On September 22, 2013 by theseventhsphinx

Style is not something applied. It is something inherent, something that permeates.

It is of the nature of that in which it is found, whether the poem, the manner of a god,

the bearing of a man. It is not a dress.

                                               – Wallace Stevens, Two or Three Ideas. 1951

This ultra-civilized tableau stopped me in my tracks. The hat, the coffee, the satchel, the book…the comfortably crossed legs and arms, the slightly open button-down. I am immediately ready to put my faith in this man’s aesthetic sensibilities. He was so absorbed that he didn’t notice me at first. When he did he asked good-naturedly (and with the faintest of what I’m guessing was a Scandinavian accent, which would explain everything) if the picture had turned out. “Not half bad!” I told him, smiling to give away that I liked it very well indeed.

Readers, here is a lesson in how to spot a gentleman.

In other news, autumn is shaping up here in Boston.

on the street: duochrome

There’s nothing remarkable about the individual elements here but I really like how they are put together. Just two colors, effectively, but two excellent colors, two of my favorite colors (and a favorite combination, black and ivory) asymmetrically spread out between the outfit and the accessories (and kind of the skin and the hair, too).

I like to see a sweater with shorts, as well. And the heel coming out of the shoe to prop up the bag is the kind of moment I find instantly endearing.

This trio was a bit suspicious but they agreed to let me take their picture.

The little bottle of milk is perhaps my favorite detail. The 90s-esque backpack charms me, too.

on the street: the red boots

IMG_6497I like the contrast of these neutral separates with the bold red shoe. I especially like that we have all solids here. Everything is as simple as can be but for me the look totally escapes being dull.

Great against the blue of the bench, too, and somehow improved with the mannequin style guardians of American Apparel watching over all.

Looks like I’m not the only one out here trying to get the shot.

I like his outfit, too. Denim and white with brown accents, a great combination of colors. I’m slowly coming around to this modified moccasin style shoe.
